Setting

Last fall, Jasmine invited me to a grass volleyball session. After playing together, they mentioned they also attended a D-level open gym/drill session organized by someone named Jexy. And that's how I started playing more volleyball in Austin, after a year of only going to ACC volleyball once a week.

This year I joined a six week league with the same group of newfound friends, and we've been practicing three or four times a week in the two weeks leading up to the league. I'm setting for my team, and can feel myself slowly improving through the more consistent playtime and drilling, plus some helpful feedback from several people--Jeffrey, Jexy, Anthony, Andrew, and probably others.

I like that setting requires a lot of precision, that I get to participate in most points, and that I can provide the opportunity for someone else to get a satisfying hit. A skilled setter's movements look so elegant: the inward springiness of the wrist and fingers, the gentle arc of the ball toward the outside pin, the momentary weightlessness of a quick middle hit, the blind confidence of a cross-court back set. Like poetry in motion.

In general I find myself gravitating more toward supporting roles, like playing second violin, or passing in Rocket League, or unofficially helping out with small group. I like being in the background. If the carry is failing, then I will consider taking over myself, but otherwise is it better for the team to be a good support? Or is it just avoiding taking on responsibility?
